WHITNEY STONE (1908-1979) was graduated from Harvard in 1930, when he joined the firm that was co‐founded by his father, Charles A. Stone, and Edwin S. Webster in 1889. He worked in various executive positions in the concern before World War II, and was president from 1945 to 1958 and chairman of the board from 1959 to 1974.
Mr. Stone was particularly proud of his concern's reputation in the design, engineering and construction of electric power generating plants, and he was instrumental in guiding the company's entry into the nuclear industry.
In 1940 the concern conducted the first successful atomic chain reaction, at Stagg Field in Chicago, and built the town of Oak Ridge, Tenn., site of the famed Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. From 1954 to 1958 it undertook the design and engineering of the first commercial nuclear reactor, at Shippingport, Pa.
During Mr. Stone's tenure as president and chairman of the board, the concern has built many other nuclear plants, including one at Brookhaven, L.I., in 1960.
